Georgetown faculty's talk, compassion series headline week's events

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.


Monday, June 10

Georgetown faculty to warn of crash diet consequences

Dr. Kathryn Sandberg, professor and assistant chair of research in the Department of Medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology seminar, "Long-term Adverse Cardio-metabolic Consequences of Crash Diets and Other Causes of Periodic Inadequate Food Intake," at noon on Monday, June 10, in room 6A.

Pastoral director to discuss compassion in three parts

Compassion Series logoDoris Whitaker, UMMC pastoral services director, will deliver a three-part UMMC Everyday Wellness series on compassion on successive Mondays in June.

She will present "Where it Begins: Self-compassion" from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, June 10 in classroom 4A; "Compassion for Me, Compassion for You" from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, June 17 in classroom 4A; and "Compassion in Health Care" from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, June 24 in classroom 6A.

Graduate Studies dean to target preeclampsia therapy

Dr. Joey Granger, dean of the UMMC School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, and director of the Center for Excellence in Cardiovascular and Renal Research, will give the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Preeclampsia: Pathophysiological Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targets," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

MIND Center chair to discuss Alzheimer's research

Dr. Tom Mosley, The MIND Center chair and director, will present “New Research into the Causes of Alzheimer’s and Dementia” during the "Mind Matters" program from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, in the second-floor conference rooms of the student union. Check-in will take place from 5:30-6 p.m.

Vanderbilt faculty to propose renal cell carcinoma makeovers

Kimryn Rathmell, Cornelius Abernathy Craig Professor, professor of medicine and director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Vanderbilt University, will give the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute Grand Rounds presentation, “Remodeling and Makeovers in Renal Cell Carcinoma,” at noon on Monday, June 17, in room CW106 in the Classroom Wing.
